Question
I have a 3 yr old Toy Poodle. I have just noticed that he has lost his bottom front teeth is it normal?

Answer
Hello Jennifer,
That would depend on if they were puppy teeth or adult teeth.  I have seen in some dogs that they don't loose their puppy teeth when they should and the adult teeth grow in beside the puppy teeth.  Sometimes the puppy teeth need to be removed by a Vet because they don't fall out on their own.  If this is the case with your dog, there should be adult teeth either coming in below the puppy teeth or behind the puppy teeth.  If the lost teeth are adult teeth, then this is not normal and you need to find out why your dog is loosing adult teeth.
Are you feeding your dog canned food or dry dog food?  If you are feeding canned food only, then your dog isn't getting the scraping action of the dry food to help clean his teeth, which can lead to his teeth rotting and falling out.  Dry food, hard treats, bones or chewies and hard toys can help scrape the tartar off the teeth, which is like us brushing our teeth.  If this isn't done, the dog can suffer from bad breath, rotting teeth and even can be at risk for heart problems, due to infections from bad teeth.
If you notice that your dog is loosing adult teeth, please see your Vet about dental suggestions that can help.
