Poodle-Bichon indoor marking

Question
I rescued this dog when he was a year old and I was his third owner because he marks indoors regardless if he can go outside. I have diapered him and also tried to retrain him, which worked for about a year, and  now he is marking again so I am back to the diapers.  He is just 6 years old now.

What do you suggest?

Answer
Hello Susan,
Most dogs that have problems marking in the house are doing so because there is still the smell of urine in the house.  They can still smell urine even if the people in the house can't smell it so they think its all right to remark because they have gone there before.  You will have to reclean those areas that your dog keeps going back to with a Pet Approved Cleaning Product that contains enzymes that will "eat" the urine smell away.  You might even use a Steam Cleaner and go over the whole house to be sure you got all the pee spots.  Once you have cleaned the house, retrain him using the method you have used before.

You might try the Bell Method.
Hang a jingle bell from the door that your dog goes out to potty through and every time that you take your dog outside, have him touch the bell with his nose.  Give him a treat when he touches the bell with his nose, then take him outside.  When he potties outside, praise him.  Soon he will start ringing the bell when he needs to go outside.  When he does this on his own, give him lots of praise so he knows he has done something good.

Give this a retry and if you have other questions or if he is still having problems with this, write me back.
