72 hrs after spaying, my toy poodle is panting, and whining.

We had our six year old, black toy poodle spayed on Tuesday, 3/1.  The reason we waited so long is that she was previously owned by a groomer who had her as a show dog.  She had two liters and since being with us has had her heat cycle regularly every six months.  We didn't want her to get any infections so we had her spayed.
Now, she is panting, scratching, licking my hand excessively, and is restless from time to time.  Are the stitches making her itch because she is healing or could it be something worse?  I have not seen any vomiting or bleeding, but I'm extremely concerned.  Concerned enough that I have slept on the floor with her two nights in a row now because I was afraid of her jumping on the bed.  Any help you could give would be truly appreciated.

Spaying could be much harder on a 6 year old than the typical 6 month old that would be back to normal the next day.  If your vet has Saturday hours, I would at least call.  If the vet didn't give you anything, you might try a little buffered aspirin. Never give a dog any other over the counter pain killer.  The newer ones kill the dog instead.  I think the dose is one 325 mg tablet for each 35 pounds of dog, maybe less than half a tablet for her.  The smaller baby aspirin might be easier to work with, but aspirin.  If she gets worse, I would try to get through to to the vet's after hours number.  My vet's regular number rolls over to a paging service after hours.  If she is not back to normal by Monday, call the vet.  

You are right to spay her.  All the people I know, spay their breeding stock when they retire.  It reduces the chances of infections and cancer allowing the dog to enjoy her deserved retirement.  I am glad you are giving her a good home.  One of the joys of the smaller dogs, is their longer lives.  With good care, she could easily have another active 10 years.
