Poodle Seizures

Question
I have a 9 year old miniature poodle, Hershey.  I'm not quite sure it's a seizure that he had but he just stops dead in his tracks and loses all movement in his hind legs.  They just drag and wobble.  He doesn't seem like he's in pain.....just a little confused.  I hold him for about five minutes and he's back to running around like nothing happened.  This happened about two years ago but he's now had two episode in as many weeks.

Answer
Hello Nancy,
Sounds like Seizure to me.  Seizures can be anything from a blink of the eye, to a full-blown gran mal that shakes the whole body.
They usually last around 1-5 minutes, but when its your baby there on the floor, it seems like forever.

When my boy has a seizure, I hold him, talk to him and say a little prayer.
Try and keep a journal of your dogs seizures.  How long they go, what he does, if he loses his bowels or not, etc.  Record them and let your Vet know at the end of 3 months.  Your vet can determine if your dog would be a canidate for treatment or not.

Be aware that most people say that the treatment is usually worse than the seizures themselves and if your dogs seizures aren't severe, people tend to not put their dogs on the medication.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions about seizures in Poodles or other dog questions for me, please feel free to ask.
