Right Size Poodle

Question
I would really appreciate some advice about which size poodle would be best suited to someone with physical limitations. I'm able to take walks at a moderate pace. Would a miniature require more extensive exercise than long walks would provide? Would a toy size require a significantly less amount of exercise? Your professional opinion will help to make the right choice.
Thank you

Answer
Hello Jackie,
I have had all three sizes of the Poodles and in my expirence my dogs have adapted their lifestyle to mine.  I am somewhat active, but spend some time on the couch.  My dogs pace themselves to me, and tend to be as active as I am.  For you, you might consider a Miniature Poodle, as they tend to be less active than the Toy Poodles.
On the other hand, a Standard Poodle might help you if you are unsteady on your feet or could use support once in a while.  They use Std Poodles sometimes for Service dogs because of their size and intelligence.
You will need to pick out a puppy (and look at the parents also) based on what you are looking for.  Talk to the breeders and find out if they have a dog that is more laid back.  Not all Poodles are hyper or laid back.  Individual dogs will have different temperments, even in the same litter.  By talking to the Breeders, they can give you an idea of what the individual puppies temperments will be and can pick a puppy that will fit your lifestyle.

I also know that my dogs expend alot of energy just by playing fetch or chasing each other around the yard.  You might check to see if your city has a Dog Park where your dog can play and get rid of pent up energy without necessairly taking a walk everyday.

Give it some thought and if you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
