Question
aweek ago we adopted an adult standard poodle. her previous owner was unhappy with how she did in dog shows.she is a wonderful dog but terribly underweight she was only being fed one cup of food a day soaked in water and mixed with yogurt. I have kept her brand the same as not to upset her stomach but gradually increasing the amount and leaving some dry for her to snack on , but considering it's a holistic  all natural food (ori-jen)she's has too frequent runny bowel movements. clearly this diet is not working, could you please give some advise for a diet that would put weight on and aid with her digestion? thankyou , chrissy.

Answer
Hello Chrissy,
My suggestion would be to feed her a cup of her dry food with this diet that I have created.  It provides meat, fruit, veggies, and vitamins and minerals that are good for dogs and will help add some weight if you want them to gain some pounds.

1 lb Hamburger, Lamb, or Turkey Burger
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil
1 cup Spinach, blended with the Oil of the Sardines
1 egg scrambled
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/8 tsp Garlic powder
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using broth (either a meat or Veggie variety) for better flavor
1/2 cup Cottage Cheese or Yogurt
You can keep it in a sealed container for about a week.  It has vitamins and nutrients that are good for a dogs skin and coat.
I would give her a cup of her dry food with about a 1/2 cup of this mixture on her food 2 X a day.  Give her a couple of weeks on this diet to see if she is fattening up some.

You can give her Kao Pectate or a "Dose of the Pink Stuff" Pepto Bismol, to help her with her diarrhea if she still has the runs.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
