hours of sleep

Question
I was wondering how many hours a day a dog will typically sleep.  I have a toy poodle that I have to leave alone all day while I'm at work.  I feel bad about this every time I leave in the morning.  I am guessing he spends most of the day bored, and therefore sleeps.  But I wonder what he would do if I were home all day...ie, would he be sleeping even then?  I am thinking about taking him to "doggie daycare" one day a week...the day when I have to be gone for another four hours in the evening.  I know poodles tend to be people dogs, so I am hoping he will enjoy being with other (small) dogs when he's at daycare, and not dread going!

Answer
Dogs seem to be very adaptable.  If they have nothing better to do, they will sleep most of the day.  Given a stimulating activity, they may go most of the day without any sleep.  My dogs are often allowed to vegetate all day.  Then comes a weekend, and I may drag one of them out for a 12 hour day at a fund raiser.  Towards the end of a day like that, they may crash every chance they get.

At least the younger ones, always seem to enjoy playing with other dogs.  I often suggest doggy day care.  A dog may not mind sleeping all day while the owner is at work, but in the evening may need attention than the owner is up to.  I think you will find him under foot on the days when he knows he is going to day care, making sure you don't forget.  The more the dog is under foot when you are getting ready to go, the more likely you will take it along, right?
