3 y/o Toy Poodle Falling Over

Question
Hi Kim,  I have a Pedigree Male Toy Poodle, who is 3 years old this month.  He was castrated last year.  His health has been good and he is average weight.  He eats and exercises well.  Though he seldom goes throughout the night without needing to wee.

2 months ago he was behaving normally and had been lying on a bed, but when he tried to stand up, he fell off the bed and then fell down the stairs.  Every time that he tried to stand up, he fell down.  After about 5 mins of cuddles, he was back to normal.  Tonight, he was lying on the sofa, as normal, but when he tried to stand up, he was staggering from side to side, like a drunk man, and his front paws were crossing in front of each other and buckling under his body, making it almost impossible for him to walk.  Again, after 5 minutes of cuddles, he is now running about the house, as normal.

Is it possible that he has just suffered bad cramp in his legs, or should I be worried?

Thanks

Answer
Hello Audrey,
It sounds like your dog has had a couple of small seizures rather than cramps.  You might contact your Vet if it keeps happening.  In the meantime, you should record each episode that your dog has, recording time, length, and what your dog does during these episodes.

The bad thing about seizures is that there is no treatment unless the dog is having frequent seizures.  The treatment is Pheno Barbatol and its said to be worse than the seizures.

Other than holding your dog, or helping to settle him when he is seizing, and you may even say a little prayer for him if that is something that you think will work for you (it helps for my dogs) there is nothing you can do when he is seizing.
Do try to talk him through it and reassure him that nothing is going to hurt him.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
