Question
I purchased a toy poodle from and breeder who told me my poodle was a full breed poodle, but I never seen a straight hair poodle. He is only 6 months old, and I would like to know if their hair get curly with age, or do you think I have a poodle mix?

Answer
I can not tell you that for certain as I can neither see your poodle, know whom the breeder is or know of its pedigree.  I can tell you that the poodles coat does not fully mature until they are 2 years of age so you have a long way yet to go to see if it will get curl or not.  I can also tell you that becuase of the breeds of dogs that were used to downsize the toy poodle from the standard poodle that they usually do not have the nice, curly and dense coat that the standard poodles have.  The only way to know if your poodle is a purebred poodle or not is to check into the breeder.  Having AKC or UKC papers on a dog is not always a 100% fool proof method of knowing if your dog is pure or not but it is a pretty good indication.  I would also check out your breeders references with others that have purchased poodles from them, their vet, and any other breeder friends that they may have to see what kind of breeder they are.  If you do have AKC papers on the puppy, look to see if the sire has been DNA tested.  This DNA tells you only whom the parents of the puppy are.  This will tell you that the sire is INDEED the offspring of the parents listed on the pedigree.  If the sire has not been DNA tested then you can talk to AKC about your concerns and request with them that the breeder DNA your puppies parents to prove parentage.  If you purchased a puppy with no papers or from a pet store or puppy mill or one time only breeder then there is little you can do to be assured your puppy is a purebred.  Always check out a breeder before purchasing a puppy and check their references.  This will allievate a lot of fears and misunderstandings in the first place.  If you purchased your puppy for just a pet then I wouldnt worry too much about if he is a purebred or not and just enjoy him as a pet.  Herritage will have no barring on the quality of pet he will be for you and your family as long as he is treated right, taken care of, and well trained.  Since you question his herritage I would also strongly recommend that you have him neutered ASAP.
