Standard Poodle query

Question
I own a black standard poodle he turned 8 in January. Last August we had him neutered taking advice from our vet as he had a slightly enlarged prostrate. We have never breed with this dog and he has been the best poodle we have ever owned. His temperament is excellent even around children. So neutering to prevent aggression was not an issue for him. Since I have got him neutered he has started to dribble here and there in the house as he moves from place to place. Other than this he is fine although much smellier than he used to be. When bathed the smell can return quite quickly again. We have taken him to two different vets and there is no physiological reason for the dribbling, his kidneys and bladder are free from disease and he has no infections etc. Do you know if there is anything we can do or do we just follow him about with a mop? He is a very valued member of the family. The vet did try giving him a testosterone injection to encourage him to empty his bladder more frequently but he was really stinky after this so I would not want to do this again!

Answer
Hello Eileen,
I have heard of this before with males after being neutered.  I have heard that it can be due to the accidental streching of the bladder muscle during surgery.  Sometimes a dog will get over this as the muscle (which is flexable like a rubber band) will eventually go back to its original tightness, but other times it won't.  It can take up to 6-8 months for the muscle to go back to its original state.

If your dog continues to dribble around the house, there is a product called Belly Band for male dogs.  It is just a band that goes around the males middle and catches the little dribbles.  You can find them at http://charminstyles.com/ or you can type "Belly Bands for Male Dogs" into your search engine.

As for the smell, you can try a Clarifying Shampoo (which will strip the oils from the hair, taking with it the smell) but don't use it too frequently because you don't want to strip all the healthy oils from the coat.   You can also use the remedy that they use to get skunk smells out of a dogs coat.  It is as follows:
1/2 cup Water
1/2 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
2-3 tps Baking Soda
1/4 -1/2 cup dish soap
DO NOT store this mixture in a closed bottle as it will explode.
As long as its in an open bottle, you can store it for about 1 week, but it works best when its fresh.
Sallys Beauty Supply sells a product called Silk Elements Glossing Polish.  You can find it by going to this link:

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
