Why does my poodle become so grumpy when woken up?

Dogs, like people, when sleeping soundly will enter REM sleep, also known as dream sleep or deep sleep.  Dogs and people both can react violently when woken up from this kind of sleep, possibly because of what they are dreaming about or because they get startled.    

Try to wake your dog slowly, maybe calling his/her name from a different room or gently wafting something that smells good under its nose.  If you make waking up a positive thing, your dog may wake up in a better mood.
