Question
I have three white poodles, one has a reddish tint that started on her frt paws and now has moved tp the rear. her feet seem to be quie tender, she pulls away. I have soaked them in peroxide but still nothing. Is this some sort of disease? Infection. The other two have no problem. They are all from the same litter. HELP..what do I do?

Answer
Hello Ellen,
The main reason that white dogs get reddish stains on their hair is because chemicals in the dogs tears (eye stains) or in their saliva mixes with chemicals in their hair causing the stains.
It also tends to happen more in white dogs that have one white parent and one black parent.

You said that your dogs feet seem tender or seem to bother her.  She is probably chewing her feet because they are irritating her which will cause the stains.  The irritation could be due to allergies.  I recommend *benedryl for a week to see if this helps with her feet.  You didn't say whether your dogs are Toy Miniature or Standard.  If they are Toy or Miniature, give her a 1/2 tablet, if she is a standard, give her a whole tablet.
Also, instead of Peroxide, use a *hydrocortizone cream (such as Benedryl cream) or an anti itch cream to help.  If her feet are swollen and flaky, then it could be a yeast infection and you can use a *yeast cream (such as Monostat) to help.

When you take her to the groomer, see if they will use a #10 on her feet (most will use a #15) rather than the #15 because her skin may be more sensitive, which will cause them to get razor burn.

*(These are just suggestions that I use for my guys and though I have checked with my vet first, you may want to pass these suggestions by your Vet before you try them with your dog.)

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.
