Car-ride quivers

Question
We have the most fun-loving 2 year old mini Parti poodle but it is breaking my heart when I see her quiver in the back seat of the car when she goes for a long car ride or a long boat ride.  I do not want to medicate her, but would like to know how I can distract her or modify her behavior.  She loves to get in the car and isn't bothered by our "regular" car rides.  Should I hold her or offer treats?

Answer
Hello Denise,
Sometimes when a dog looks out the window too long on a car ride, it does the same thing it does to us and they can get disorinated and sick.  You might try putting her in a crate while in the car or boat for short periods of time if you know its going to be a long ride (alternate 15-20 min out of the crate, then 15-20 min in the crate). You might also take more frequent rest stops to let her get out and move around a bit and take a potty break.

If you hold her or give her treats when she is shaking, she will think that that is what she is suppose to do and it will only make it worse.

When you put her in her crate, give her a favorite toy or sleep in an old tee shirt for a couple of days and give that to her because it is something that has your scent on it.  It will make her feel more comfortable and may help with her shaking.  Also, you might withhold food and water about 4 hours before your long trip as her quaking can cause stomach upset, which can lead to vomiting or diarrhea.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
