irritated poodle ears

Question
After being told that the inner ear hair of a poodle puppy was to be kept trimmed, I decided to trim my poodles ear hair with a micro touch hair groomer for people since I figured it would be safe and easy to use.  After trimming the puppies ear hair, the puppies ears seemed to become really itchy and irritated for the puppy.  He scratches and shakes his head alot.  Is there anything to do to help with the itch and irritation?  P.S.  I will not try that again.

Answer
Hello Lynda,
The best thing that you can do to remove the hair from your dogs ears is your fingers.  Pulling the hair out is the best way to remove the hair because you can get the hair from deep within the ear canal without too much discomfort.  There is also a powder that you can use to help make the hair easier to grab and remove.
If you feel uncomfortable pulling the hair out, get your dogs groomer to do it.
What probably happened with the trimmers is that some of the clipped hair got down in the ear canal causing the itching and irritation.  The hair on the inside of the ear flap can be clipped so that it doesn't fall inside the ear and cause irritation.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
