Question
my 8 lb. female poodle had 4 puppies on 3-17-2007. Their father is a 4lb. toy poodle. The puppies weight at birth ranged from 5 oz. to 6.5 oz. In one week, they have doubled their size.Is this common? And will they slow down in growing and level off? If they continue growing at this rate they will be bigger than both parents combined!

Answer
You have nice healthy puppies there.  They are supposed to double their birth weight in one week.  The average for toy poodles I like to is is 1/2 oz or more per day in weight gain for the first 3-4 weeks.  This is normal growth dont worry about it.  They are not abnormally big.  You will however want to do some research on your lines and see how many miniatures and oversized toys there are in the line.  With those birth weights they will be on the large toy small miniature (oversized toy) size.  However that could change as they are still very small and they will slow down.  All puppies grow at different rates.  There arent any really good weight charts out there that I like.  Especially since poodles are not judged on weight but on height.  This chart is probably one of the best out there for puppy weights and estimating adult size.  But remember its just an estimate.
