Toy Poodles in Heat

Question
My toy poodle had puppies 3.5 months ago. She shouldn't be in heat till June. I caught her and my male "locked". Is it possible for her to be in heat with no outwardly visible signs? Or is it possible that he managed to get her and "lock" but she's not in heat?

Answer
Hello Amy,
Most females will go into heat again about 5-6 months after having puppies.  Some females will come early though.  Your male could have just smelled something on her and tried to breed her, but she could very likely get pregnant again if her and the male were successful and she was in heat.  If you think she is pregnant, start her on a good dog diet and it would do her good to take Vitamins and Minerals that will help her body through another pregnancy.

This is a general diet that will give your dog the Vitamins and Minerals that will make her body strong and healthy.

1 lb Hamburger or Turkey Burger (70-30 because of higher fat content)
1/2 lb Spinach
1/2 lb Broccoli
1 can Pink Salmon
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil (use the oil of the Salmon and Sardines and blend it with the Spinach and Broccoli to make a juice
2 eggs scrambled
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/4 tsp Garlic powder
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using chicken broth for better flavor
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup Cottage Cheese

I cook the meat, fish, carrots, garlic powder and eggs together and add it to the rice and applesauce.  Add the green veggie juice and Cottage Cheese separately to her dry food daily.
This mixture should last you about a week in a sealed container.  If your dog isn't interested in eating this mixture, try lowering the amount of or removing the greens juice.  Some dogs don't like the taste.  Also, this recipe is for a large dog, so if you want to half it that would be fine.

You might also check with your Vet to see what he/she recommends.  It is tough on a dogs body to go through a pregnancy.  To go through a back-to-back pregnancy puts alot of stress on a dogs body, so its best to do all you can for her if she turns out to be pregnant again.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.
