weight gain after 6 months of age

Question
Hi Kim,

I have a toy poodle. She is 6 months old and has recently been spayed. She weighs about 2.8 kg.

I was wondering what the general pattern of weight gain is after six months of age? Can I expect her to put much additional weight on?

We have a fence she can wiggle through fairly easily at the moment and are so hoping she will get a bit more weight on her so this isnt an issue.

Thankyou in advance
Lisa

Answer
Hello Lisa,
She should have most of her height by 6 months of age, and will mainly need to fill out some.  As her muscles mature, she will get a bit broader shoulder area, and will fill out in the hip some.  This may cause her to be too big to fit through the gap in the fence.  In the meantime, put a board up that covers the gap and wire it on to the fence until she is big enough to not fit through.

Do watch that you are feeding her an amount that is recommended for her weight.  Toy Poodles can put too much weight on too fast and it is hard on their legs.  It is also harder to get it off, that it was to get it on.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
