My toy poodles had babies

Question
Hello Kim,

Thank you for taking the time and your expertise.
My female poodle and male poodle had 3 babies 2 boys and 1 girl.  I'm giving away the two boys and I'm keeping the girl.

I'm afraid that once the girl gets big to bread, the dad would want to mate with her.

How do I avoid this? If they mate and she gets pregnant, what happens?  Are the puppies coming out with defects?

For now, I'm keeping them separate until I get the right answers... Thank you...

Answer
Congratulations Juan on your puppies.
You can leave the girl with the dad until about 7-9 months old.  Until then, she won't come into heat and her dad can't breed her.  After that, you should get her spayed unless you are going to find a different male for your new girl.  Otherwise, you will have to make sure that you separate new girl and her dad when she comes into heat.  If he were to breed her, it isn't a bad breeding unless both him and her have a genetic defect.  Then it would be doubled up in the puppies.  Some breeders actually do a father/daughter or mother/son breeding if they have really good qualities in their dogs that they want passed on to their puppies, but its not recommended unless your dogs are of excellent quality.
If you aren't planning on breeding her, its best for her health to get her fixed.  You will help her have a healthy life and eliminate her chances for reproductive cancers and illnesses.

You might think about putting an ad in your local paper for the boy puppies.  You may sell them for a nice price.  (I would list them for $100 each and see what you get) That insures that they get a good home because you don't want people taking a free puppy just to resell it or who knows what.  If a person pays for their dog, there is a better chance that they will give it a good home.

Again, good going on the 3 puppies.
If I can be of further assistance, please ask.
Kim
