my tiny toy poodle seems to have stomach and/or intestinal problems

Question
from time to time over the years, my 8 yr old poodle vomits, has diarrhea, and acts lethargic until the stomach gets better.  i've assumed it was an ulcer because of the blood in the vomit.  it looks like coffe grounds in the vomit.  the vet says this is blood.  over the years i've taken her to different vets who do blood work, etc.  she has been prescribed a "band-aid" type med (forgot the name) in the past that seemed to help and repair what seemed to be an ulcer.  i keep her on a raw food diet with organic supplements and evo dry food.  occasionally she gets fresh broccoli or banana or 1 slice of strawberry as a treat.  she also likes to lick the sardine can after it's been emptied out.  i never let her eat scraps from us like she use to do as a puppy.  she is a very healthy happy dog, with the exception of this occasional problem with vomiting and diarrhea.  is there something natural or otc i can give her when this problem arises?

Answer
Hello Tamra,
Some dogs just have a sensitive stomach and it can sometimes cause intestinal upset.  You can give your dog Pepto Bismol to help when she gets the diarrhea and vomits.  For a dog her size, I would give her 1 cc (acutally, its around 1 cc for every 5-7 lbs, so if she is under 5 lbs, you can give her 1/2 cc)
Giving her a raw diet is fine, but watch switching or introducing new foods to her as this can cause stomach upset.  Try to keep her on a consistant diet as much as possible.  You can give her the oil from the sardines, as fish oil is very healthy for a dog.  Just pour it on her food and mix it in so that the oil coats the kibble.  You can even give her one sardine as it contains the most fish oil.

This is the diet that I recommend for dogs eating a raw food diet, you can change or add things that your dog prefers.
1 raw chicken wing, cut into easy to eat pieces
The rest of the ingredients can be mixed and added to dry food:
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil
1 cup Spinach blended with the oil of the sardines
1 egg scrambled
1 1/2 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/8 tsp Garlic powder
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using chicken or beef broth for better flavor
1/2 cup Cottage Cheese
This recipe is for a large dog, but if you think this is more than you would use in a week, it freezes nicely.  It has vitamins and minerals that are good for a dogs coat and skin.
Your dog might have diarrhea for a couple of days after being on this diet until her stomach adjusts to some of the oils and new foods.  Use the Pepto if she has diarrhea.

Feel free to give this a try and if you have questions for me about this or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask.
