Question
My toy poodle, Toby is one yr old but his eating habit is so poor. He does not take his food...I'll feed him but he'll spit it out. HAving this problem since he was 4mths old.....he's abt 10inches in height but weighs only abt 2.3kg. He's taking the dried dog food (Regal - Turkey bites)...recommend by the vet. Sometimes, I soak in hot water n give or sometimes raw...either way he does not take them easily. Have tried giving him cooked salmon fish...ate for 1-2 days then he refuse to take...same with eggs too. Tried brown rice, carrot....he refuses them.

He's quite active but problem is only on the eating. Checked wit the vet but she says poodles are pickly when it comes to food.

Pls help how can I improve on my pet's diet.

Thanks

Answer
Hello Santhi,
Have you had the Vet check his teeth/gums?  There could be a problem there that is making him not want to eat or it could be painful to eat.  Watch him eat and see if you notice him struggling to chew.  Do you have any other dogs in the house that might be causing Toby to be afraid to eat.  Sometimes when there are two dogs, if the one dog is more dominate than the other, the submissive dog may be afraid to eat around the dominate dog.

Try this diet for him.  You can add it to his regular food and mix it in, or you can give this to him by itself.  I would start by adding some to his regular dry food then go straight if he refuses it.
Ingredients for "Kim's Doggie Diet"
1 lb Hamburger(Raw) or Turkey Burger (you can cook the turkey if prefered)
1 can Salmon
1 tin sardines in Olive Oil
2 cups packed Spinach, cooked and chopped (you can use Chicken broth if preferred to cook it down in)
1 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1-2 eggs cooked and scrambled
1/2-1 cup applesauce
Fresh Veggies: Carrots, Cabbage (red is preferred), Peas, Califlower (chopped small), Mashed Sweet Potato (unless your dog has Yeast issues)
Optional: Cottage Cheese (great for adding weight), Yogurt (for stomach issues)

Mix it together and serve in small batches.  If you have a small dog, it freezes nicely.
About all you can do if he is healthy (no teeth problems) is to leave the food out where he can access it and he will eat when he is hungry.  If there are treats he likes, you can give him a treat or two to boost his weight.

I hope this diet helps Toby to have an improved appatite.
