Question
I've been doing what you said--giving my poodle Science Diet food for overweight dogs, and she hasn't had anything else, except for some steamed broccoli my grandmother couldn't resist giving her. The only problem is, she's refusing to eat the dog food. I want her to loose weight so badly so she can run and play again, but I'm afraid she'll become malnutritioned if this keeps up. (My mom jokes that she's on a hunger strike.) Tonight, I poured a little fat free beef broth over her food so maybe she would eat it, and she did... A little. Should I keep doing this? How can I get her to eat her diet food?

Answer
Actually, before I read the rest of your note, I was going to suggest dribbling a bit of beef broth over it.  She is probably going to continue to try and not eat the food, figuring you'll all give in and feed her like she has been fed in the past.  Try and resist this. It is truly something that will mean life or death for her.  Broccoli shouldn't hurt her - but try and keep from giving her 'people food'.  After the initial period when she gets used to it, she will probably do fine.  Just use the beef broth for now and slowly wean her off that if you can after awhile.

Good luck to you hon, and bless you for loving your pup enough to do the right thing, when the "feel good" quick fix is to give her the 'goodies' she has had in the past.  You're a strong and loving 'mom' to your pup and I feel it will pay off in the long run.

Big hugs,

Kathryn
