black skin on white poodle

Question
Can you tell me why a white poodle is born with black skin?
Thank you,
Sharon

Answer
Hello Sharon,
The AKC Standard for White Poodles is a dog that has Black points on their bodies ie: Eye rims, Lips, Nose, and Pads.  To get these Inky Black points, breeders would breed their White dogs to Black dogs.  This lead to White hair and Black skin.  This proved to be beneficial because the Black skin helped protect the dog from Sunburn.  Some people will line breed White to White to produce the True White, but you have to watch this as it can lead to health problems down the road.

I hope this has helped you some.  If you have other questions about this, or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask.
