Question
my standard poodle is 6 months old.  Just got her from breeder and she was never really house trained.  She seems to have to pee around every two or three hours.  Also seems that her urine smells very strong and I do see some signs of brownish color if I wipe her.

When they come into hear is the blood bright red ...is there alot or little and how long does that last?

thx,   Bobbi

Answer
Hello Bobbi,
If you are home with her all the time, you can take her out every 2-3 hours, then increase the time she holds it until she is where you want her.  Take her to the same place everytime so she recognizes the smell and will want to return there.

Heat blood will be fairly Red, and you will see it for 2/3 of her heat peroid.  Mark it down on the calendar when you first see blood and 9 days after is when she will Stand for a male.  This is a good time to keep her in the house in a crate and only let her out to potty.  Otherwise you will have guests coming around to visit.

When you first see blood, she won't be attractive to the males, but will bleed.  We have our females wear a "childs Pull-Up diaper" to help keep leaks off the floor.
9 days after you see blood, she will be attractive to males for about 10 days or so.  Keep her up at this time.
After about 19 days from first seeing blood, you can give her a bit more freedom, because she should be out of heat.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
