HI again Keisha thanks for your prompt reply.  Iv just measured Gemma and she is around 11 inches in height...she is very big for a toy poodle and I am questioning whether or not she has got some miniature in her!  I am cutting down her treats so hopefully that shall work and I am also walking her 3 times a day now
Thank you so much for your invaluable help you are a treasure.

HI there Keisha.  I was wondering if you could help again.  I am trying to put my eight year old toy poodle Gemma on a diet.  My Husband toldme that I feed her far too much and should only be feeding her once a day. I normally give her 2 meals a day...do youthink this is too much for a dog of her size and what do you think the average toy poodle should weigh? Gemma weighs just under 10 kilos!  Once again thank you for your help and for listening, kind regards, Julie Robinson (I hope you and your pooches are all well!)

That is quite heavy for a toy poodle.  How much exactly does she measure in height from floor to withers (shoulders)?  Is she indeed 10 inches and under or is she really a miniature? As toy poodles are measured by shoulder height and there is not weight limit it is hard to say what is too heavy.  You need to look at the bone structure of the poodle and then feel the ribs of the dog to determine if she is too heavy.  If you can not feel the ribs at all, not even a little, then she is too heavy.  A poodle at good weight you should be able to just make out the ribs with your fingers.  10 kilos is like 22 lbs and that is VERY large for a toy.  That is more like a minaiture poodle.  Most of my girls are truely miniature in height as they are 10.5 inches and 11 inches tall.  They both weigh 8-10 lbs. I usually feed my dogs 2 times a day but you need to follow the directions on the food bag.  If it says to feed your dog 1 cup then I would divide it in half and give half in the AM and have just before bed.  If your dog truely is too fat, I would purchase a weight loss food for her.  Then I would go by the directions on that bag and once again cut it in half and give half in the AM and half before bed.
Hope that helps.

Answer
No problem.  Sorry this one took me so long I was brushing out a full show coat.  Only got through 1/3 of it so far.  Its a LOT of work LOL.
Julie where are you located?  In some countries toys are 11 inches and under.  So she still may be in the toy range if you are NOT in the US.
Since the original poodles were the standards and other sizes were made from the standards, including the toy variety, it therefore makes it possible genetically to get a LOT of size variation in the smaller poodles.  That is why when people call me up looking for a puppy and want it to be just a certain size I tell them its almost impossible to tell what size a puppy will be at maturity.  There are so many factors to consider.  Including how the owner feeds the dog.  As you are seeing LOL.  But she still sound on the heavy side to me so I would find a weightloss food and decrease her weight a bit.  Sounds like you are off to a great start with the feeding and excersizing her.
