Doggy Breath

Question
Hi Kim,
What can I do for doggy breath for my little lb. poodle.  I brush her teeth every morning with doggy tooth paste.  Her diet consists of Wellness as well as two tablespoons of the diet suggested by you for dogs with seizures (which by the way, she LOVES!)  I thought about getting something to freshen her breath, but do not know what would be best for her.  Maybe something to put in her water?  I just not sure what to do.  I would like to help her breath some way.
Thank you

Answer
Hello Wanda,
Doggie breath is a hard condition to deal with.  The best thing you can do is to give your dog things to chew on that will help scrape the tartar off the teeth.  Natural Smoked bones, teething toys, and dental chews (most pet stores have a wide selection) will help, and some of them even have breath freshening features.  You can also give your dog RAW chicken wing pieces and let her chew them up (raw chicken bones are soft and ok for a dog to chew), the extra stomach acids will help keep her teeth clean and smelling better.  I would give her a couple of wing pieces (they break into 3 sections, the drummy, the piece with 2 bones in it and the end piece), about twice a week or so.
If you are serious about breath freshening products, there is a company called "Pet Kiss Company" that has a wide range of products for helping with bad breath.  You can find them at: http://www.petkiss.com/Plaque_and_Tartar_Control.html  (This will take you to the Plaque and Tartar site, but you can get to the other products from there)

Some people make up a mixture of Sunflower Oil and Parsley Oil, with a very small drop of Pepperment Oil.  Drop this on her tounge and it will help her breath for awhile.
You can also use Baking Soda when you brush her teeth, but most dogs don't tolerate it very well.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
