QuestionI A INTERESTED IN PURCHASING A POODLE. I WAS TOLD BY THE BREEDER THAT HE IS 7 MONTHS. HIS TESTICLES DID NOT DESCEND. I AM NOT PLANNING ON BREEDING HIM BUT IS THAT OK OR SHOULD I BE AWARE OF ANY OTHER MEDICAL PROBLEMS?
AnswerHi Tessia,
Sorry for the late reply, but for some reason I kept getting an error message when I attempted to access this website on Saturday afternoon.
I have a teacup poodle whose testicles didn't descend, and I found out that it is advisable to have any dog who has this happen surgically correct the problem, because of the high incidence of cancer if you don't. I was told this by two vets....I tend to get 2 opinions before I do anything like that. I had "my guy" (named Rowdy - aptly, I might add) operated on and they neutered him at the same time. This is (in my opinion) a wise move because otherwise upon reaching maturity, some male dogs tend to get territorial (marking their territory - yep, by peeing on it) or get wanderlust (to find a female to mate with).
The surgery was a couple hundred dollars, but Rowdy is doing great and has had no problems health-wise since.
Keep in mind, ALL dogs don't develop cancer if not attended to...for me, the thought that it might happen to Rowdy was enough for me to seek help - I love my dog.
Good luck to you and your new companion!
Kathy
