Question
My standard poodle is 4 years old and was diagnosed with lymphoma.  His lymphnodes were all swollen and the biopsy proved positive. He does not act sick.  We now feed him Hills n/d caner canned food mixed with hills science food.  he is still taking prednisone. His champion father recently died at age 10 of brain cancer   what would be a good food to feed my poodle. I was told chemicals from herbicides could have caused this cancer.  we live on a farm.  i also have a female poodle who just turned 2

Answer
Hello Cathy,
My condolences to you and your dog.  I know how hard the diagnosis of cancer of any kind to a dog owner can be.  I just recently lost my Black Std Poodle of 11 years to stomach cancer.  It was hard, but I know that he has crossed the Rainbow Bridge and is waiting for me on the other side.  He lived a good life and was a happy dog.

The occurance of Canine Cancer has risen dramatically in the past 10 years or so mainly because of what we feed our dogs (in my opinion).  I have heard of alot of dogs dying from cancers caused most likely from the types of foods they are eating and what those foods are made of.

I gave my dog this recipe that I made up and it really helped him make it as long as he did.

1 lb Hamburger, Lamb, or Turkey Burger
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil
1 cup Spinach, blended with the Oil of the Sardines
1 egg scrambled
1 1/2 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/8 tsp Garlic powder
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using broth (either a meat or Veggie variety) for better flavor
1/2 cup Cottage Cheese (optional)

I would add it to Scout's dry food and later I gave it to him straight.  Fish Oil and the Cottage Cheese is suppose to help dogs with cancer, so you might give your dog a Fish Oil capsule (just pirece the capsule and squeeze it onto his food), and up the amount of the cottage cheese.

You might try the Prayers for Pets Website at http://prayersforpets.org
if you are comfortable with that.  I seemed to find that having caring people praying for me and my pet was very reassuring to me and my dog.

Hopefully you and your pet will have many happy years together and can overcome this terrible situation.  If you have other questions or comments for me, please feel free to write me.
