my new poodle wont eat his food

Question
Hey Kim,

I just adopted a 12lb poodle on Sunday...5 days ago.  I've given left out the dry dog food the rescue shelter said he was eating and I've even tried mixing it with some canned dog food...he won't eat any of it.  He won't even touch it.  As a matter of fact, when I'm not there he dumps it all over the floor.  I guess he's upset with me for leaving him to go to work.  I felt like I couldn't let him starve because he was so skittish when I first got him so I've fed him some human food each day.  He scarfs it down like he's famished but still won't touch the dry or canned dog food.  He will eat the all natural treats that the rescue shelter gave to me.  What can I do to get him to eat?  Should I just let him starve so he will eventually eat the dry dog food?
I've never owned a dog before so this is all new to me.

Please help,
Jennifer

Answer
Hello Jennifer,
Your dog could just be upset from moving to a new house, but he still needs to eat.  You could try swiching foods, such as Iams puppy, Eukanuba puppy, Science Diet Puppy, or Nutro Natural Choice Puppy, to see if he eats this kind of food better.  Stop feeding him table scraps, but you could put some of the left-overs in his doggie bowl.  You also need to feed him 3 times a day rather than any time he wants.  By feeding him anytime he wants, you don't see when he is eating, (which you need to know to help with housebreaking) and you can't tell how much he is eating.  He should be eating 1/4-1/3 cup per feeding (be sure to check on the dog food package because each formula is different)

If he still won't eat his food, you can try adding a small spoon of Tuna (very rich in Omega 3-6) or you can try adding a small spoon of cream of chicken soup and a little water (makes a broth dogs love).

Give this a try and if you have other questions or concerns or need other ideas, please feel free to ask.
