When to mate Mini Poodle

Question
Hi we have a female poodle who is about 1 year and 1 month old. She is bleeding for the second day today and she has had this cycle before. We just don't know when to mate her. Should she not be bleeding when we take her to the male's house? Or should the male come to our house? Thanks.

Answer
Well you really need to ask yourself a lot of questions first before you even start breeding.  Are you really ready for the huge responsibility of bringing a litter into the world?  Why are you breeding this litter?  If it is just to let your female have one litter, or because she is just so cute, or has the best personality, or to let your kids witness the "miracle" or birth, these are NOT good enough reasons to breed. Are you armed with all the information that you need to be?  Is your female really worthy of breeding?  Is she as close to the breed standard as you can possibly get?  Would she do well if shown (as that is the quality you need to be breeding)?  You want to improve the breed not destroy it.  Do you know her history?  Do you know her lines?  Do you know if there are any underlying genetic issues in her lines that you should be concerned about?  Is this male even a good match for her?  Are you breeding to her faults and will she offset his faults?  Are their colors compatable?  Or will you ruin the pigment of her or his points by breeding these two together?  Are you prepared monetarily to pay a stud fee or pick of litter?  Are you prepared monetarily incase of an emergency such as a C-Section which can be VERY pricey?  Do you know what to do if something goes wrong?  Have you ever raised a litter before?  Do you have someone there for you that is willing to help answer questions if you have some? Are you ready to be without your poodle for a week or more while she is out being bred?  If you answered NO to any of these questions I would seriously reconcider breeding a litter.
Now to answer the questions
A female will typically bleed for around 7 days and then it will start to slack off.  It is then when you would want to put her with the male.  Most females are typically fertile from 10-16 days of their cycle.  Many breeders will bred every other day.  Some males will only breed once when they think the time is right.  Males should never come to your house to breed.  They will function better in their home enviorment.  Hopefully the male that you have picked is already proven.  I would never put an unproven female with an unproven male.  That is just not good breeding practice.
Good luck with your venture and please think seriously about breeding before you just jump into it.
