Question
My standard poodle is unweight from when i bought the dog. he seems very happy and the vet told me he is fine when i asked for vitamins. He is 4 months old and weighs 16lbs. reading onlines makes me to understand that he is very very underweight. His mom weighs 55lbs and his dad weighs 69lbs. I feed him Ultra Nutro puppy food for big dogs. He has a large appetite and has been dewormed. Some people suggest i feed him human baby food-chicken/vegetable. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hello Commy,
I have a diet in mind that will help your dog gain some weight.  You might also try feeding him some canned Large Breed Puppy formula (use the Ultra Nutro if they have it) dog food, and the dry food he is currently eatting as his normal food until he fattens up a bit.  .

1 lb Beef, Chicken, Lamb or Turkey meat (cooked and drain 1/2 of the fat off)
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil
1 cup Spinach blended with the oil of the sardines
1 egg scrambled
1 1/2 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/8 tsp Garlic powder
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using chicken or beef broth for better flavor
1/2 cup Cottage Cheese
This recipe is for a large dog, but if you think this is more than you would use in a week, it freezes nicely.  It has vitamins and minerals that are good for a dogs coat and skin and that are good for a growing puppy.  I would give him about 1/2 this diet and 1/2 of what you are feeding him now, (approximately 1 1/2 cups 2 X a day, but if you are home and able, its better if he eats 3 times a day, its better on his young stomach and will help him gain some weight.  About a cup per meal X 3)

Little treats here and there are fine also.  You don't want to overdo it, but 4-5 a day would be ok.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
