Question
KEISHA, MY QUESTION IS ABOUT MY TOY PEKEA POO MIX MALE DOG.
HE HAS RECENTLY SIRED 3 PUPS FROM MY MALTESE.
SHE WEIGHS 12 LBS HE WEIGHS ONLY 7LBS BUT HE IS OBSESSED WITH WANTING TO CARE FOR THE PUPS.
IT IS AWFULLY CUTE BUT HE IS ALWAYS BY THE LITTLE NEST OF BLANKETS WHERE THEY LAY. WHEN THE MALTESE GETS UP TO STRETCH A BIT, AFTER THE PUPS HAVE NURSED AND FALL BACK TO SLEEP, HE SITS THERE LIKE THE GUARD DOG. THIS IS FINE ONLY HE IS STARING TO EVEN GROWL AT HER WHEN SHE RETURNS AND TONITE THEY WERE ATTACKING EACH OTHER.
THE PUPS ARE ONLY 2 WEEKS OLD AND HAVE JUST BEGUN TO OPEN THIER EYES. WHEN  THE MALTESE IS NOT AROUND HE LICKS THIER FACES IF THEY START TO CRY AND IF ONE GETS STUCK IN THE BLANKET HE RUNS TO ME AND CRIES FOR ME TO FOLLOW HIM BACK TO THE NEST. IS THIS NORMAL? THANKS JEANNINE

Answer
No its not normal for a male to be this way.  He needs to be kept away from the situation and let the mother do her job of raising the puppies.  Once the puppies are older like 5-6 weeks then he can be reintroduced and let to socialize as the mother will be pretty much done nursing the puppies.  If you continue to let him keep on with this behavior it may keep your female from mothering the puppies and you will then have to take over all the care of feeding and cleaning up after the puppies yourself.
