Question
I had a poodle for 13years as of this january. I had to put her down today. The vet said she had an extremely infected uterus and her white blood cell count was 40,000 and should have been, 15,000. The vet all noticed she has lumps on her stomach that she thought may be cancer, she said 75% cancer 25% maybe not. I took her to the vet yesterday for the blood work and today she called to tell me about the blood count and uterus. My dog could not move and was trembling, the vet said the emergency surgery would be between $400 and $700 on the uterus. After having her put down, now I am feeling a little guilty, maybe the surgery would help her to move, and maybe not cancer or the cancer could have been removed. The $400 to $700 was for the emergency spay not including the surgery for the cancer. With my dogs age I was told that would be to hard on her and I wouldnt want to put her through that. I am not sure if I did right or wrong, all I know it was by far the most difficult thing I have ever done in my entire life. Maybe your expertise in this matter will help. Thank you

Answer
Hello Bill.

I am so very sorry about the loss of your Poodle. But I want to reassure you that you did the right thing. At her age it was unlikely she would of pulled through the operation and based on what you told me it does sound like she was suffering a great deal.

You did the most kindest thing you could do so please do not blame yourself and I'm very sure, your poodle still loves you to bits and is thanking you from the other side for helping her move on.

My condolences again and all the best.
