get poodle to retrieve the ball

Question
Dear Labman,

Can you tell me how to get my poodle to retrieve the ball? She will gladly chase it, but not bring it back.

She is a two year old, standard poodle. I allowed bad habits to develop by throwing her sticks and then retrieving them myself. I had a supply of about 12 favorite sticks that I would throw and she would chase. When I ran out of sticks I would walk down to the end of the yard, collect them all and begin again. It didn't start out like this, but through my sloppiness I have created a dog that will chase but not retrieve. I am now getting far more exercise (not necessarily a bad thing) than she is, but it is rather humilating to have switched roles with my dog!

Thanks,
Laurie

Answer
If she holds it, but doesn't bring it to you, try moving away from her.  Even clap you hands and run.  If she starts toward you with it, praise her.

If she just drops it and runs to you. it may be harder.  Try throwing it just out of reach, and if she even brings it to where you can reach it, pick it up and praise her.

If non of that works, try putting some treats in a container, perhaps a sturdy one. Let her chase that.  Then retrieve it yourself, and give her a treat.  Try again.  She may decide to expedite you getting the container.  If that doesn't work, you may have rewarded her for not doing what you wanted.
