Dragging rear end on the ground

Question
My 7 yo mini poodle sometimes will look at me and drag her rear on the ground for a few seconds. I take her out and she does not go. She has done this AFTER a vet visit so I know it is not worms. She sometimes does this when I come home and she greets me. This behavior is not chronic, it happens on occasion but is quite bizarre.

Any ideas?

Answer
Hello Amy,
Sounds like your Poodle may have full anal glands.
What you need to do is to have your Groomer express the glands next time she gets groomed.  If your Groomer feels uncomfortable doing the glands, ask your Vet if they will do it.

Dogs have two scent sacs located on either side of their anus.  These scent sacs hold scent that the dog will "add" to his feces after he potties to mark his "doo".  This is a type of calling card to let other dogs know who the dog is.  Normally they empty on their own, but sometimes they will get impacted and will cause the dog to scoot his bottom on the ground to help empty them.
Vets or Groomers will express them if they get full and impacted.

I would try this and if your dog is still dragging her butt on the ground, you might take a stool sample into your Vet (if you haven't already).  Sometimes, your dog can get worms that are invisible to the naked eye.

Well, I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.

Have a great day, and Many "Expressive" Tail Wags.
