Std Poodle Weak Rear Legs

Question
I apologize if you have answered this question before but I didn't see my exact problem asked. I have a 12 year old standard that has always been very active with no muscle problems. Over the last year he has progressively gotten weaker in the rear legs and has problems getting up on our tile and hardwood floors. I have spent hours on the internet and cannot find a product that I think will work in his situation. Rubber shoes are not an option - I think they would just make fantastic chew toys the first morning we leave him alone in the house! I was hoping for something more like "shorts" with strong elastic between the legs that won't allow them to separate any more than just what he'd need to walk. He can stand up just fine, but if one rear leg slips he has no control over both of them going opposite directions. He doesn't appear in pain but has never been a complainer even when we know something's wrong. Any advice would be very appreciated.

Answer
Hello Tracy,
You might think about getting him on some Glucosamine and Chondroitin, which will help will arthritis and will help rebuild his cartilage.
You can use a human grade pill or get a supplement from your Vet.

I can't think of any products like what you are describing, but you might try a childs leatard, boys bike shorts, or even something like a scuba suit.  It is made out of rubber and is very supportive.  You would have to see if they could custom make your dog something like that.

As for booties, you could try infant socks that have the rubber dots on the bottom to help keep from slipping.  They come in multi-packs and you can loosely tie them on to keep them from slipping off.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
