teacup silver poodle hair color changing to brown

Question
Hello,
I am very distressed and hope you can help me. Last year when my mom passed away I assumed responsibility for her beloved five year old teacup silver poodle "Midgee." Over the last two months I have noticed that Midgee's fur has turned the ugliest color of brown everywhere on her body EXCEPT her head which is still the pretty silver gray color.
I love this little girl, BUT she is SO UGLY now and looks SO bad with a silver gray head but an ugly dark brown body!
I have shaved her twice hoping the hair would grow back in silver gray, but it has not.
I have not taken her to a vet as she doesn't behave as if she is sick in any way, but someone mentioned to me on the phone the other day that maybe the food I'm feeding her has caused this, i.e. she has lost a lot of teeth at her young age and the vet had suggested I switch her to soft food...but, I've been feeding her the same Mighty Dog Healthy Maturity soft pouch feed I give my 14 year old Silky terrier. Could this have caused the problem? My Silky's coat hasn't changed, but I realize that he's a different breed and different situation.
I would deeply appreciate any advice and insight you could render as to what would be best to feed her IF you think the food might be causing the discoloration. I will always love Midgee regardless, but I just cannot give up hope that we can get her back to looking her "normal" silver gray self.
Thanks so very much for your kind reply. Really appreciate it.

Answer
Hello Reevah,
I know that Blue Poodles (which crop up in Silver litters) have brown hair on their back until they are shaved the first time, but since your dog is 5 yrs old, this is new to me.

It could be the food, if the food you are feeding her now is different from what she has been used to.  Some foods contain dyes in them that will dye the dogs hair a different color.  I would switch her food to a soft food, but I would leave some hard food out for her if possible because the hard food is good for keeping her teeth clean.

Otherwise, I can't really think of anything else that could be causing her hair color change.  I don't think it is anything medical so I wouldn't worry about her being sick.

If she is still having problems within a month or so of you changing her food, then let me know and I will do some searching to see if there could be anything else that could be causing her discoloration.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help,
Kim
