Question
I am looking at buying a toy puppy.  I am specifically looking for a black toy female.  When I called the owner and left message, I specifically asked if she had a puppy like that.  She called back and said yes.  I went to visit and my first impression was that the dog had brown in her coat.  Her eyes are greenish blue and her nose is brown with pink around the edge.  Her mom is a greyish brown and her dad is supposedly black.  Her mom also looks to be abour 6-8 pounds.  Her father is about 10 pounds.  My question is this.... will her coat turn brown or any other color as she ages.  And does the color of her eyes and nose devalue her?  Also how big do you think she will get?  Thanks for you quick response.

Answer
Hello Leanne,
I don't know about this breeder or her intentions, but it sounds like either she is trying to deceive you, or she doesn't know her colors very well.

It sounds to me like the mother is what they call a Silver-Beige color.  Other Silver-Beige Poodles that I have seen have been just what you described above.  Silver or Gray with a brown tint, very pretty if you ask me.
The puppy sounds like its going to be a Blue color rather than Black.  The Blue color tends to crop up in Silver/Silver-Beige/Black litters every so often (I myself have the pleasure of owning a Blue boy out of a Silver litter).
The Blue color can be identified by a glazing of brown on the top part of the coat.  Blue colored dogs can range from being almost totally black, to almost Silver.  If you had future breeding purposes in mind, a Blue dog can throw all the colors in his/her background.  So if your girl has Blue, Black, Brown, Silver and Silver-Beige in her background, then she will produce any or all of these colors when bred by a male with a similar background of colors.

Her nose and eye colors are traits of Brown and/or Apricot colored dogs, so she most likely has some Brown or Apricot colored dogs in her background.  Her nose and eyes may darken as she ages, but may not.  Genetics play a part in the color of the nose, eyes, and lips and with her apparent mixed background, it is hard to tell what color they will be when she reaches maturity.

As for her guesstimated height and weight, I would say that she may stand 8"-9" at the shoulder and could weigh around 6-8 lbs.  Females tend to be slightly smaller than the males.
Toy Poodles can't be over 10" at the shoulder according to the Standard.

I hope I have answered all your questions for you.  If you have any other questions or comments for me, please feel freel to ask.

I attached a Picture of my Blue boy, Riot at age 7 months with his brown highlights.  For some odd reason, he only got the highlights on the back half of his body.  He is blue all over though.
Feel free to e-mail me if this picture doesn't show up and I will re-send it to you.
