Question
Hi!
I have a 1 1/2 year old toy poodle.  Both his parents were reds (so I was told), and he is an apricot.
A couple months ago I groomed him myself.  I trimmed his coat very short.  As it's grown back he has developed an oddly colored coat spot on the top of his back directly between his hips.  It's a quarter sized spot of red hair with a circle of white hair around it.  The red hair is coarser than the rest of his coat.  As it grew out I decided to shave the area to make sure the skin was okay, and it seems to be.
A couple people thought it might be a birthmark just showing now that he's losing his puppy coat.  Any ideas?  Also, could more of these develop?  Am I going to end up with a polka-dotted poodle ?  :)
He seems to be very healthy otherwise...
Thanks!
Rachel

Answer
Hi Rachel :-)

It sounds like this is a one off mark on his coat. It isn't a birthmark hun becae a birthmark would be on his skin not on his coat.

It is possible somewhere in his genes there was a white poodle and this has slightly came out in him. Also it is not uncommon for light coloured dogs such as reds, appricots, chocolate etc to lose there hair colour early in life or become grey earlier. This is usually caused by genetics from his pedigree and breeding line.

Nothing is wrong with him so do not worry. :-)
