Question
I recently adopted a poodle terrier mix who is 11 months old.  He is very smart and I believe he is training us all quite nicely.  My question is what to feed him.  I've tried 3 different dry foods including Science Diet.  He sniffs it and walks away. I've tried moistening it with broth---
same thing.  He will eat canned moist food  and
begs for table scraps.  He doesn't drink enough
water either.  Any suggestions would be most appreciated.  Thankyou.

Answer
Hello!  Well, first of all - every dog I've ever had will beg for table scraps. If they don't actively beg, they'll look at you with those big, sweet, pleading eyes. :)

As for food, Science Diet (in my mind, anyway) IS the best, but Pedigree has the same ingredients as Science Diet (I checked the ingredients and with the vet I work for and he admitted - reluctantly - that they're the same).  What you may want to do is try (as you've been doing) moistening the dry food with some broth AND then adding some canned food and mixing it up good.

My experience with dogs is that when they're hungry, they (like kids) will eat the food in front of them, but yours might be different. Also, I have the competition thing going as I have 3 dogs and they eat the dry food because if they don't, one of their siblings (not really blood sibs, but I call them sisters and brothers) will get "their" share.

As for water, once again, you may want to put a little broth in with the water to flavor it a bit....or a little sugar.  Not much sugar, but enough to make it enticing.

Oh, also, it's best to get in the habit of never giving "people food" to your dog. If you do and your dog is picky, he/she is just likely to wait until you give in and he gets the people food.

I do wish you luck.
