poodle having accidents in the house

Question
Our 6 year old poodle who we adopted 1.5 years ago is having accidents in the house. He had always done well with house training and has had few accidents. He has an appt. with his Vet. tomorrow to rule out a medical issue. His schedule has not changed etc. so we are at a loss as to why he would have several accidents within a couple of days. This has been going on for a couple of weeks.

Answer
Hello Gina,
There are several things that could cause your dog to start peeing in the house.  With medical issues being a concern, since he hasn't had very many accidents, going to the Vet is a good idea.
Even though you haven't made any changes to his schedule as of recently, he could be acting out if he is under any stress, or if you have changed anything (not with his schedule), but with your schedules (such as coming home later than usual or leaving earlier for work) or the amount of time you spend with him.
I am not saying that this has happened, but our pets are sensitive to minor changes in their enviroment and that can stress them out, which can lead to potty issues.

When you clean your pet messes up, make sure you use a Pet Approved cleaning product that says specifically for Pet Accidents, because it will contain enzymes that will "eat" the odor out of the carpet.  This will help keep your dog from wanting to come back to those spots to go again.

Also, you didn't say if your dog is neutered or not, but this could make a difference.  Male dogs can be fine in a house if they are there by themselves, but if you bring a female into the house, it can cause a male to start marking.  **Again, I am not saying that you have brought a female into your house, but if a female has been in there, her scent could cause your male to mark.

I hope this has helped some.  If you have other questions or if your dog is still peeing in the house after his Vet visit (and you find that there is nothing wrong) please feel free to write me again.
