Border Terriers or Stanard poodles

I am retiring, and I want a dog, but which one, a quiz tells me Border Terrier, to mention other others and a standard poodle, which was is less excitiable. etc

One thing I don't like about those breed selectors is that they assume all members of a breed are alike.  Buy a purebred puppy, and you can count on what it will look like and roughly what size it is.  It may or may not be typical of its breed when it is mature.  

One of the best sources for dogs with a predictable personality is the rescue
dogs.  These are dogs that lost their home, but were taken into a foster home
to be retrained as necessary and placed in the right home for them.  You may
find a rescue near you starting at http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm  The rescues charge a fee to help cover their expenses, but is much less than the price of a puppy plus all its medical expenses the first year.
