Question
I have a 2 and a half year old female toy poodle who is 5 pounds, and a friends wants me to mate her with her 10 pounds Maltese and poodle mixed male dog when she is i heat in December,is this a good choice or will her puppies be too big for her to carry and deliver. My female toy poodle is very petite so I was concerned about her health.

Answer
Hello Nita,
Your girl should be ok for breeding if she is in good health now and is kept in good health during her pregnancy.  You can do this by supplementing her food with a vitamin rich food and maybe even adding some canned food to her diet.  Some good rich dog foods that would be good for her are:  Science Diet, Eukanuba, Nutro Natural Choice, Sensible Choice, Bil-Jac, or Royal Canin.  These foods are more expensive, but are very healthy for your dog.

You may also want her to get a Pre Breeding Vet exam before she is bred to make sure that she doesn't have any problems that could be passed to the male during breeding, or to the puppies either in the womb or genetically.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me about this or other breeding questions, please feel free to ask.
