Poodles and Birds

Question
Hi,

Thank you for your response to my original question.  It helps alot to know that someone else does have birds and dogs.  I'm always concerned for the safety of my birds and it is nice to know that with proper training poodles do well with them.

I do have another question with regard to the above.  What size poodle would you recommend?  We have the 2 birds along with 5 children ages 5 to 17.  We have a large fenced-in yard and lots of room to play.  I appreciate any insight you can provide.

Thank you.

Answer
With children that young I would recommend the bigger the better.  So a miniature or standard poodle would be best.  With a 5 year old I would not recommend a toy poodle as they are a little more fragile and could get hurt if dropped or played too roughly with.  Some breeders may try to talk you into one of the horribly tiny poodles sometimes called "teacup"  stay away from anyone that offers this small of a poodle.  A very small poodle should never go to a family with young children and they often have many health issues.  When purchasing a miniature or standard poodle make sure you find a reputable breeder.  Make sure that you get ATLEAST a 1 year health guarantee against genetic issues (2 years is better, especially where standard poodles are concerned).
