Picking show/breeding female

Question
We have two black standard poodle adult females we kept from our litter and are trying to decide which girl to keep for show/breeding?

One is really outgoing with strangers and will approach them and likes to be petted. She moves with good carriage but is weak in the pastern and can tend to land a little heavy, more so on one side. She stands and moves weaker in the pastern and sometimes will flatten her feet as well. This girl has all of her teeth and also lacks some chin and has a wider backskull. Her color is fading somewhat.

The other one is more reserved and tends to not go to strangers and if they startle or approach her she will want to get away, but will stand for exam easily, we had her at a handling class.
She could use better carriage when viewed moving from the side and has solid pasterns and good feet when landing or standing.
She has all of her teeth except the large top back molar closest to the front on each side of her mouth. She has a better head than the other girl, skull is not so rounded and muzzle is better.
Her color is blacker.

In your opinion which poodle would you say is a better choice for show/breeding?

Thanks

Answer
Hello Joanne,
Personally I would go with the second dog because she has less faults that would lead to less point deductions in the ring, and you don't want to inadvertantly breed faults into your line.  Some minor faults you can fix by finding a really good male that can compensate your females negatives, but you have to watch breeding major faults into your line because once there, they are very hard to get rid of.  You can work on her shyness and her movement to help improve those traits.
To improve her shyness, take her out around people (such as pet stores, dog parks, or even store parking lots) and bring treats with you.  If people want to pet her, have them come up to her and bend down or crouch and let her come up to them.  Give them a treat and see if she will take the treat from them.  Once she takes the treat, then see if she will let them pet her.  Praise from you will encourage her and will let her know that you approve of them petting her also.  When you have guests over to your house, have people get down to her level or sit on the floor to see her.  Some dogs get nervous when people are over top of them so when you get down on or below their level, it makes them feel more secure.
When gaiting your dog, use toys or a special yummy treat to get her attitude up and happy, then gait her.  Use a high pitched voice and make it fun for her.  If she starts to seem uninterested, stop and switch to something more fun, then go back to gaiting.  You don't want her running or jumping when gaiting, so give her a word (such as "Gait" or "Lets Show") when you want her to move out.
You might also get her into something like Obedience or Agility to improve her movement and her confidence when moving.  If she is more confident when moving out, she won't think as much about her carrage and it should improve.  Poodles excel at multi-tasking, and besides, all work and no play makes a Poodle bored.

Give this a try and if you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
