Question
What is the normal length of time for poodles to be stuck together? Is it better to put them in a room for their privacy? Is it a process to put cold water on them to get unstuck or the male dogs excitement? Sorry for so many questions.

Answer
Hello Jenny,
Your female should start bleeding when she starts her heat, and 9-11 days in she should be ready to breed.
A "Tie" can last from 5-10 minutes to up to 30 minutes or longer.  When pairing two dogs for breeding, its best to put them in a smaller room and to stay and help if you are needed.  Sometimes males get so excited that they don't remember which end to mount, and some need help positioning themselves to get inside the female.
Once the tie is over, the male will "exit" the female on his own and his penis will gradually shrink back to normal size.

If your male isn't as interested or isn't hitting his mark like he should, put the female outside to potty, then let her in and let the male out to mark her urine.  When he comes back in, let them try again and see if he is successful.

When they do break apart, put the female in a crate or small area where she can rest.  Don't let her out to potty for at least 30 minutes after breeding.  The male can go back outside, then let him rest also.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other breeding questions, whelping questions or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask.
