Question
I have a toy poodle puppy that is about 6 to 7 weeks out. He is a male and as cute as can be, but the house breaking and telling him no is a problem. Resinty hes been in his own area and outside and he does great with his pad, but im afread to let him play in the house. His biteing doesn't hurt, but when you tell him no he ignores it. I'v tried spanking gentally, saying no in a stern voice, and ignoring him. Please help me out! Thank you!

Answer
Hello Arra,
Congradulations on your new puppy.

As to the housebreaking, puppies that young don't get the sensation that they need to pee until they are about 12 weeks old.  Until that time, when they have to pee they just squat and go with no urge or indication that they need to.  You can however, teach your puppy the routine of going out to the same spot everyday and around the same times.  Praise him if he goes, and you can even give him a little treat or two, and if he doesn't go just bring him back inside and put him in his crate for 5 minutes, then take him back out and try again.  Repete until he will potty for you.  If he does potty inside, you can tell him NO! then get mad at the potty spot.  Slap the carpet, tell the potty spot that its "Bad" and make sure your dog is watching.  He will see that the potty spot is bad and won't want to go there again.  You can also clean the spot up with paper towels and put the paper towels outside where you want your dog to go.  This way, he can smell that he has gone there before and will want to go there again.

As to you telling him NO! and him not understanding, the problem is that he doesn't see you as BOSS.  Instead he thinks that you are playing with him.  What you need to do is to Dominate him to show him that you are his Boss.  To do this, when he tries to bite you or snap at you, you need to hold him down on the floor on his side with his head down and make him stay there until he relaxes.  You can also stare at him and make him look away from you.  This helps him understand that you are his master and that he has to listen to you.  When you decide to let him up, just turn and walk away from him and let him up on his own.
You can also do an exercise with him that will help you and him bond better, and will also show him that you are Dominate in a non-threatening way.

The Puppy Exam:
Start off by sitting on the floor with your dog laying in your lap on his back and his head toward your stomach.  For the first couple times, just let him lay there and pet his belly until he will relax and lay still.  After he starts to relax in your lap, you can start going over him to get him used to being handled.  Look in his ears, in his mouth, and in his eyes.  Check his coat to get him used to being checked for parasites (fleas or ticks) or for injuries.  Mess with his feet and toenails so that he also gets used to having them worked with (great for future grooming sessions) and be sure to handle his rear area also.  Rub around his tail and squeeze gently around the base of his tail. (this is to get him used to having his tail shaved and his rear messed with).  Don't make a big deal about this, you can just do it in the evenings when you are relaxing or watching tv.

Give it a try and see if Resinty will respond better to you.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask me.
