Lonely Toy Poodle?

Question
Hi! I am looking at adopting a 12 week old toy poodle, but am a little worried about leaving him home while I am at work during the day. Since poodles are highly intelligent I worry that he may end up with anxiety. I do plan on being very active with my new addition (classes, doggy day care once a week, nightly activities). Do you think that my puppy will adapt okay to me being away 40 hours a week? Thanks so much!

Answer
Personally as a breeder I would not sell you a puppy.  Puppies need more attention than you would be able to give as well as heavy training.  Let alone puppies do not do well being alone all day long and would probably have anxiety issues like you fear.  Especially potty training.  If you had 2-3 weeks that you could take off on vaction to break the puppy in to your new routine and start training then I wouldnt purchase a puppy.  I would suggest an older dog for you.  Doesnt have to be too old but one that has been already potty trained and is a little more mature such as 7 mo or older.  Sometimes you will find breeders that are retiring dogs from their breeeding programs or have an older puppy that didnt work out for show or something and I think that would be a better option for you.  Poodles are highly social creatures and dont do well alone.  I would recommend if you are stuck on a puppy that you get 2 pups.  That way the puppy isnt alone all day long.  2 puppies isnt a lot more work than one and with training you can train them together.
