Question
My daughter and I would like to breed our 6 year old Cairn Terrier with a Standard Poodle , have you ever known of this being done and if so what did the puppies comwe out like.

Arthur and Theresa

Answer
Hello Arthur,
I have never seen the puppies of a Carin and Poodle before, but I can imagine that they are cute.
I see no reason that they can't be bred together as long as both dogs are at least 2 yrs old, are in good health (which also means that they don't have any genetic problems that could be passed down to the puppies) and have good temperments.
It would be a good idea if the Poodle was a bit larger than the Carin.  This is because you don't want a puppy with a Carin body build, but with Toy Poodle legs.  That would put stress on the leg bones of the dog when he/she got older.

I would assume that you will have both wiry/straight coated and curly/soft coated puppies.

If you are sucessful, I would love to see pictures of the puppies.
You can e-mail me at Topkdog@webtv.net

Good Luck and if you have other questions, please feel free to ask.

After I wrote this answer, I looked into Carin Terrier/Poodle crosses, and discovered that there is an actual "breed" called the Carinoodle/Poocan, or Carin Poodle Hybred.

Here is a couple of sites that talk more in detail about the Carinoodle:
