Question
QUESTION: Hi, I'm hoping you can help me. My 15 week old Maltese puppy was diagnosed with kennel cough a few days after we brought him home 4 weeks ago. The vet gave him antibiotics which lasted 2 weeks. He's still coughing at night or whenever he lays down and I am very worried. I brought him back to the vet last week and ofcourse he didn't cough once so the vet said he was fine. What should I do? Could this just be residual effects or has the cough returned? I just read all sorts of things about heart failure and other diseases so now I"m a nervous wreck. plase help

ANSWER: Hi Ronald, Sorry, I did not see your question here.
It is normal for Kennel Cough to take up to 30 days before it clears.  Ask your vet if you can give a little bit of Robitussin at bed time...
It should help a bunch.

Also, a immune system booster and good vitamin will help ***

QUESTION: Thank you for the response! Our vet decided to put him on another week's worth of anntibiotics. His cough sounds WORSE today and I'm still very worried.  I will ask him abou the cough medicine tomorrow.  Our vet actually sold us "pet tabs- palatable vitamin-mieral supplement for dogs" when we first got him.  Are the vitamins you recommended better? Thanks for the help!

Answer
Hi again - Yes, sometimes the vet will give another antibiotic to help with the secondary bacterial infections... The main infection was a Virus and cannot be cured by antibiotics.  Many times only "time" and "good" nutrition will cure the pup...

The good thing is that many dogs tend to get this when they are under 18 months old... Not too many adult dogs will get a bad case of kennel cough...

As for the vitamins - the Pet Tabs is the brand that the vet sells... They only refer to that brand because they are selling it.  It is not a bad brand but not too great either.

Here is a little about the NuVET Plus -

NuVet Plus is made by NuVet Labs. The Veterinarians, Physicians, Pharmacists and Nutritional Scientists of NuVet Labs have blended a precise combination of human grade, natural vitamins, minerals, herbs and antioxidants proven to fight diseases and other "free radicals".

Chewable wafers can be given as a treat or mixed with food. Your pet will love the taste so much they will lick it off your fingers. Even the pickiest eaters will LOVE the taste!!! They also sell a powder form for a picky doggie... Ask for the NuVET powder...

These sell for 19.95 a bottle. ( 30 tab bottle - 30 day supply for med-lg dog, 60 days for small dog)
Plus shipping cost.

90 tab bottle is 55.50 plus shipping.

NuVET is all Human GRADE and made in an FDA approved lab.....YOU can't say that about many supplements on the market... NuVET is excellent quality.

And, yes, YOUR vet should have given you some cough meds... Robitussin or something that he/she sells... It is very common practice to give a little cough med to a dog ....Ask the vet for the recommended dosage.
