i just inherited an 8 year old maltese that was my mom's pride and joy. my mom just passed away at 88 and this dog was her constant companion. that being said, the dog is not housebroken. she will sleep all night on the bed and wake up and go an do her busines outside, but aws soon as I leave to go to work, her buwsiness is all over the house. i started crating her about a week ago and now she pees in her crate and stands in it for 6 hours until i come home. then i bathe her, wash the crate, feed, walk let her sit on the couch for the evening with me, go to bed and then the same thing happens the next day.

Firstly,
Dont give up on her, Lets start from scratch you have inherited a dog and need to make her used to YOUR rules.
I would suggest puppy pads - leave her some where to go to the toilet while you are out then gradually move closer to the door.
Is there time for a walk before work ?
when you get back if she has gone to the toilet clean with stain and odour remover or she will continue to go there firmly say no and pute her in her basket for 10 mins.
